Young Mary

<OC>Trad Swedish folk tune</OC>

Young Mary walks the road that takes her into town
She’s singing and she’s laughing with larks of deepest brown
She’s going to the market to sell her mother’s bread
The sun is rising, ardent, grand and colours her cheeks red

Along the road she meets him, a knight on edgy horse
He says: “I take by king and crown, if so be it by force,
And you are far to bonny, to not have known a man
Come with me in to yonder glen I’ll show you what I can”

He throws her on the heather, her bodice torn apart
She writhes and twists and begs him to spare her mother’s heart
The knight is full of laughter, his lust is fire fed
She grabs his dirk to stab him deep and soon he falls down dead

The chained our fair young maiden, and stoned her for her sin
The masters are the heroes, no blame to them we pin
The honour of the knight remembered every year
And those who saw what happened there forgot it out of fear.
Þaðan koma meyjar margs vitandi þrjár ór þeim sæ, er und þolli stendr;
Urð hétu eina, aðra Verðandi, skáru á skíði, Skuld ina þriðju;
þær lög lögðu, þær líf kuru alda börnum, örlög seggja. - Völuspá
